Editorial Workshop: The Ride

In a two-day workshop I was set my first ever editorial brief. Given an article titled, ‘Meatpacking’ (seen below), as from ‘The Ride’ journal, I was to design an accompanying illustration appropriate to the article, its contents, and the journal itself.

Given the very prominent theme of FOOD in the article, and talk of the bike used, the idea started out as an illustration of a Bullitt cargo bike made out of food. This includes all the food that gets a mention. The background of the final design is intended to reflect the recurring mentions of ‘glowing embers’, ‘warming fires’, and ‘a warm fuzzy feeling despite the soggy weather’. I wanted the effect to be playful yet truthful to the article.

I created the design using Photoshop. Perhaps I will experiment with mixed materials for such types of briefs in the future.
